Learning a foreign language gives children an opportunity to broaden their horizons and stretch their thinking. All our children in years 3, 4, 5, and 6 learn Spanish through listening and speaking, role-playing, songs and games.
Pupils are encouraged to think about how the language works, and to compare Spanish with their own language. They create “detective clues” which help them to memorise vocabulary and grammar.
Whilst there is some writing, the emphasis is on speaking and listening in the early stages. Children in years 5 & 6 progress to talking in complete sentences about themselves and others, giving opinions and reasons why. They are also encouraged to write in sentences.
